During an almost three-and-half hour long speech at the opening of the 19th CPC National Congress on Wednesday, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, Xi Jinping, outlined the vision for China’s development over the next five years.
"With decades of hard work, socialism with Chinese characteristics has crossed the threshold into a new era," he said.
He set long-term goals for the country's development, envisioning China as a “modernized socialist country” by 2035 and a country "that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful" by 2050.
On the subject of foreign policy, Xi promised to make more contributions to building a community with a shared future for mankind and fully engaging with the world.
Meanwhile, he reiterated the country’s defensive national security policy, saying China would never seek hegemony or engage in expansionist activities.
