The US has formally reached out to UN Security Council to vote on September 11, seeking new sanctions against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
"This evening, the United States informed the UN Security Council that it intends to call a meeting to vote on a draft resolution to establish additional sanctions on North Korea on Monday, September 11," according a statement from the US mission to the UN released on Friday.
A draft UN resolution presented by the US includes an oil embargo, assets freeze on Kim Jong Un, a ban on textiles and end payments to DPRK guest workers, according to AFP.
Saturday marked the DPRK’s founding anniversary, and it came about a week after the country carried out its sixth nuclear test. It claimed that the device tested was a hydrogen bomb, which could fit on an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the United States.

An editorial published in Rodong Sinmun, the DPRK's main state newspaper, said that the nuclear weapons make the country more secure, and that the country should develop more cutting-edge weapons and continue breakthroughs, such as test-firing of ICBMs in July, South Korea's News Agency Yonhap reported.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that it is too early to talk about a vote at the Security Council on new DPRK sanctions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday that the Chinese side agrees with the UN Security Council on further actions and necessary measures.
However, China has stressed that the UN Security Council resolution would be made based on discussions among its members, not by any particular member alone, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Thursday.
He added that the reaction and measures of the UN Security Council should be conducive to advancing the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and promoting the peaceful settlement of the Korean Peninsula issue through dialogue and negotiation.
