How much do you know about earthquakes?
Mexico was rattled by two massive earthquakes this month. The first, on September 7, had a magnitude of 8.2 and was the strongest the country has seen in a century. It killed nearly 100 people, occurring on the southern Mexican coast near the state of Chiapas.
With a magnitude of 7.1, the second quake hit around 160 kilometers from the Mexican capital, Mexico City, on September 19. It has killed around 230 people including 30 students who died in a school building collapse. Rescuers are still searching for children and adults buried in the rubble.
Earthquakes have been ravaging countries and wiping out civilizations for centuries. However, it’s still a challenge for seismologists to predict or figure out when the next one will occur and where.
According to the US Geological Survey, there have been 14 major earthquakes in the last 10 years. Asian countries have been a victim of nine devastating quakes in the past decade. Indonesia alone has witnessed four.
