While abnormally warm weather has been melting the Arctic, snow storms from Siberia have blasted Britain with its worst weather since 1991. Blizzards trapped several hundred drivers on roads in Scotland forced thousands of schools to close and grounded planes.
Britain and Ireland issued their most severe weather warnings, with temperatures down to minus ten degrees Celsius in Scotland. People have been advised to stay home. Forecasters warn that freezing rain is likely across southern England in the coming days.
