Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has mandated Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly with forming a new government. Madbouly was Minister of Housing in the outgoing government, led by Sherif Ismael. CGTN's Yasser Hakim looks at why Madbouly was chosen as new premier, and what economic reforms he's expected to usher in.
It was expected that Mustafa Madbouly would succeed Sherif Ismael as Prime Minister. He led the government for a few months when Ismael underwent a brain surgery last year. But Madbouly has also been a successful and popular minister of housing.
MOHAMED EL HUSSEINY, JOURNALIST NEWS HUB "Dr. Mustafa Madbouly worked on two important mega projects. First is the New administrative Capital a very important project that the President himself has launched. He oversaw the project successfully. Secondly were the low income housing. He embarked on constructing high quality houses for the poor also supervised by the President like AL Asmarat project and he did a very good job."
And the real estate sector is one that has been booming despite the economic recession after 2011. Madbouly was part of the economic team in the outgoing government. The government had adopted a set of aggressive austerity measures to rebuild the economy. It included new taxes, reduction in energy subsidies and devaluation of the Egyptian pound. Many are wondering if he would continue on the same path.
MOHAMED EL HUSSEINY, JOURNALIST NEWS HUB "I don't expect there will be major changes in the economic policy because it's a five year plan that was installed by the previous government and he will keep on the same track. But he will try to improve other aspects especially the services such as health and Education."
Meanwhile, a new Prime Minister means new expectations for Egyptians.
"Two or three files are important. Justice and health. And education too but if he can work on two files out of the three, that's fine."
"The two most important things I want them to tackle are education and health. If they improve the education system and provide better health care services then that will be good."
The incoming prime minister has not announced his economic program or plans for the future yet.
YASSER HAKIM CAIRO, EGYPT "Sources in the government say Madbouly will finalise the new Cabinet by next Sunday. It has to be voted in by parliament first before its officially ratified by the president. Yasser Hakim for CGTN Cairo."
