More than 100,000 Saudi security officers will be deployed to protect the millions of worshippers expected to participate in the Hajj pilgrimage this week.
In the past, there have been deadly stampedes, fires, and riots, with the country also targeted by ISIL bombers in the past two years.
Authorities are however confident they have taken all precautions to ensure pilgrims’ safety.
Every year, up to three million pilgrims descend in Mecca – the epicenter of the Muslim world – to seek redemption, to forgive and to be forgiven.
Wrapped in white cloth, worshippers embark on the five-day pilgrimage, considered one of the five pillars of Islam.
All Muslims who are physically and financially able are required to make the journey to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.
