Chinese porcelain is known for its elegant shape and vivid color. And the crown jewel of Chinese porcelain-making is Jingdezhen, the center of the craft for nearly a century. CGTN reporter Ning Hong has more.
White as pearl, bright as a mirror, Chinese porcelain made in Jingdezhen is a mix of superior skill and imperial beauty. Traditional methods are still used here. Craftsmen move glazed vases and bowls into this wood kiln, which is fired by pine wood, the same method used for hundreds of years here. Local craftsmen make porcelain all by hand. There are 72 steps involved in the making of one Chinese porcelain piece. The porcelain making culture here has also attracted many artists from across the world.
YASUYO NISHIDA PORCELAIN ARTIST "So for us it is like a big dream to come to Jingdezhen, to create some works for us from our technology."
Yasuyo and her husband Vladimir are from the Czech Republic. They have worked in Japan, Europe and now in China, seeking new methods to make porcelain unique and beautiful.
YASUYO NISHIDA PORCELAIN ARTIST "About clay itself, we tried a few different clays. Those differences we tried, how it reacts after firing supervise us."
Yasuyo and her husband were invited by the International Studio of Taoxichuan, a Cultural brand from Jingdezhen, that aims to help more artists realize their dreams in this city.
LIU BOWEN, DIRECTOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIO, TAOXICHUAN "We can provide various kinds of clay, and services such as the firing of porcelain. We also arrange for some local artists to share their skills with our guest artists."
Yasuyo and her husband Vladimir hope to mass produce their creation. They found a local factory with the help of International Studio. This is a new plant, where an automated production line will churn out 50 million pieces of porcelain every year.
HUANG YEPENG, HEAD OF EQUIPMENT JINGDEZHEN YISHAN CERAMIC CO., LTD. "We are making industrialized porcelain products for daily use. It is more efficient with fewer flaws."
The factory's products are geared toward the high-end market. The porcelain industry is also providing tens of thousand jobs for local people.
NING HONG JINGDEZHEN "Building on the legacy of a millennium, porcelain making is taking on a new shape in Jingdezhen. In a widespread process of fusion, the technique and culture are seeking paths both inward-- to a more dedicated tradition, and outward-- to a more creative and inclusive industry. Both of the paths aim to ensure the city can thrive in the millennium that comes next. Ning Hong, CGTN, Jingdezhen."
