A civil servant in the central China city of Hebi has been suspended after he was filmed taking a nap behind a service counter while people queued to be seen.
A viral video shows the man, a social security administrator, slumping back in his chair while on duty.
Officials have carried out an internal investigation since the clip was posted earlier this month, causing a public outrage.
Local newspaper the Dahe Daily quoted an official saying the man had taken medicine which made him sleepy, but a statement from the administrator’s office did not mention this.
The local disciplinary body stepped in and decided to suspend his job.
some users of Sina Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, said the affair reflects a bad image of some people in the civil service, seen as a privileged profession in the country.
“This kind of officials should be given beds in their offices,” @Yugecengjingdewang said sarcastically.
“He gets paid by the government but does nothing,” wrote @Shoule19jindexiaoxiannv.
