UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid 3 - Juventus 0
[]
We begin with action from the UEFA Champions League where Cristiano Ronaldo once again showed why he is one of the greatest to play the game in Real Madrid's last 8 first leg match with Juventus. The 32-year-old had scored seven times in his last five against the Italian champs and would be on hand yet again to haunt the Old Lady with his brilliance. The defending champions, who defeated Juve 4-1 in last year's final, go in front on three minutes. Isco's cross finds the Portuguese star to poke home the opener. That's now eight in six for CR7 against the Serie A champs.
The homeside nearly get the equalizer on the stroke of half time, but Gonzalo Higuain is denied at point-blank range by Keylor Navas.
19 minutes after the re-start, Ronaldo's moment of magic arrives. A mix-up between Giorgio Chiellini and Gianluigi Buffon nearly results in Marco Asensio making it two. Following the veteran keeper's save, Dani Carvajal picks up the loose ball to cross for the forward who is able to acrobatically double Real's lead. One of the best goals you will see, and it has the home fans on their feet.
Two minutes later, Juventus are down to ten-men when Paulo Dybala receives a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Carvajal, which is made worse after Marcelo adds a third in the 72nd minute. 3-nil is how it ends. Real with one foot in the semi-final, but all the plaudits will go to Ronaldo's stellar performance.
Elsewhere in quarter-final action are Sevilla, who knocked out Manchester United, taking on Bayern Munich.
The home side almost go ahead in the 20th minute. Pablo Sarabia is left wide open from 12 yards but sends his close range effort crashing off the post.
12 minutes later the Spanish forward does find the target when he gets in behind defender Juan Bernat to fire into the bottom corner. A shock opening goal for this season's Champions League dark horses.
However, five minutes later, Bayern level the score. Frank Ribery sees his cross deflected in by Jesus Navas. The former Manchester City winger, playing as a right back on the night making it 1-l. David Soria in the Sevilla net gets a touch but it's not enough.
With 22 left on the clock, and with the La Liga club clearly tiring, the visitors are able to take advantage. Thiago heads in the winner, albeit with the help of another deflection, this time from Sergio Escudero. Bayern hold on to a 2-1 victory. Both return legs are next Wednesday.
