Interview with Ceylan: A sit-down with jury chairman of the Shanghai Int'l. Film Festival

Our Ji Xiaojun also sat down with celebrated Turkish director and screenwriter Nuri Bilge Ceylan who's leading the seven-member jury at the Shanghai International Film Festival. Here's what he said about his role as the jury president.
NURI BILGE CEYLAN, CHAIRMAN OF THE JURY SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL "It's a great pleasure for me; it's a great honor to be President of the Jury. I feel close to China actually, and so especially beautiful to be here."
Host: And this is your first time to be in the Shanghai International Film Festival?
Nuri Bilge Ceylan: Yes.
Host: So what is your impression of the festival so far?
Nuri Bilge Ceylan: It's very good, it's very professional, and very precise and very good selection of movies I supposed. I think they showed a huge amount of movies actually, so it's really important, they showed about 500 movies so there are movies for everybody. That is the most important thing I think. To show films that you normally cannot see in the normal system, commercial. That is the main mission of a festival I think.
Host: You are a major contributor in making the Turkish film known in the international scene. Are you happy with the status of Turkish's film in the international film community?
Nuri Bilge Ceylan: I think so, yay. The Turkish's filmmaking now is quite good: in numbers and also in quality. I think that are very diverse in Turkish filmmakers. And in the international level, they are not bad I think, they are very good.
Host: How would you like to comment on the rise of Asian's film cause not just Turkish's film, it's like Iranian directors, Chinese's films, the Philippine's, it's all popping up.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan: Yay, China, Iran and the Philippine, all are very interesting, very original movies from these countries, Romania also. The originality comes from these countries now, Japan and then Korea.
Host: How do you think that is going to if any reshape the industry as a whole?
Nuri Bilge Ceylan: It's already reshaping if you see the filmmaking of the world and as I said it's the hope of the film world because The originality is not easy you know. It's one of the most important thing. Still, the original stories from these countries that is important.
Host: What is your final goal of filmmaking?
Nuri Bilge Ceylan: To make a good film. A better movie, deeper movie that is my goal.
