People in Japan have gathered at Kanda Myojin shrine in Tokyo to take an icy bath. The participants first jogged around the shrine in traditional Japanese white clothes to warm up before taking the plunge. The Shinto ritual is said to purify the participants’ souls and assure good health in the new year.
