First held in 1982, Cobra Gold is the largest Asia-Pacific military exercise. It is held in Thailand every year.
Cobra Gold is among the largest multinational military exercises in which the United States participates in. It aims to improve capabilities among the participating nations in joint operations and civic action, while building up the relationship between Thailand and the US.
In 2017, 29 countries participated directly or as observers. Cobra Gold has included 35 nations as of 2016, including Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and other South Asian and Pacific Ocean countries. China was admitted to the Cobra Gold exercise for the first time in 2015, participating in humanitarian assistance training. Most nations participate as observers.
