It's time for our special series on 40 years of China's reform and opening up. China tech company Lenovo is recognized as a leading global manufacturer of computers, mobile phones and tablets. It wasn't always that way. But the company's focus on integrating their various global hubs has helped transform their business as CGTN's Dan Williams reports.
Known as the, 'City of Oaks', Raleigh in North Carolina is quickly becoming a US tech hub.
One of the reasons is that, just a few miles from the center, lies the US regional headquarters for China tech company Lenovo. Lenovo acquired IBM's personal computer business in 2005.
After a difficult integration period, Lenovo quickly became the number one PC maker and one of the world's top smartphone and tablet manufacturer. Much of that success is because the company looked to embrace different cultures.
LAURA LALTRELLO VICE PRESIDENT, LENOVO DATA CENTER SERVICES "When I started thirteen years ago, we came together as two very separate cultures. Most of the time, the difference is not one side is wrong and one side is right. One side is seeing the problem differently than the other. And if you can take both sides of the problem and put it together, you can come up with creative answers much faster than you can by having two disparate opinions or just working in a singular culture."
Lenovo is already looking to further diversify its talent. The company provides internships and scholarships in partnership with local technical colleges, offering a pathway to the company for residents in the area.
TOM LOONEY WAKE TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE "I think Lenovo is a role model globally and clearly a role model here in North Carolina here in the United States. Lenovo helps us with curriculum, Lenovo is helping us with technology to ensure that the students that graduate here are employed the moment they leave Wake Tech."
Shantal Grullon was among those who take an internship. She now combines her studies with a full-time job at Lenovo and is now being integrated into the company's culture.
SHANTAL GRULLON LENOVO EMPLOYEE "It was awesome to see what the Chinese guys had, what our Brazil guys had and what we had here and it was just an amazing experience all around to see what everyone can bring to the table. And funny enough something that one of our teams did in China, I am able to apply to my day to day job."
DAN WILLIAMS MORRISVILLE NORTH CAROLINA "Lenovo is hopeful that the initiatives the company undertakes here can then be transferred to China as well as vice versa so that the best practices of the company can be shared on a global level."
Evidence of that was demonstrated at the launch of the Lenovo Foundation. The foundation aims to further strengthen the company's global commitment to increase diversity in the workplace by providing grants to underserved communities.
TOROD NEPTUNE LENOVO CHIEF COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER "I think one of the most exciting things about working for a company like Lenovo is the fact that there are so many different and unique perspectives. Not just the Chinese culture and the western culture but everything in between. That makes for an unbelievably dynamic, cultural environment."
Lenovo hopes that diversity, from across China to the U.S. and beyond, can further strengthen their position as a global tech leader. Dan Williams, CGTN, Raleigh, North Carolina.
