In Taiwan and Hong Kong, people are also flocking to temples to be the first to burn incense.
It's a tradition in Taiwan for temples to hold a "First Incense" competition and offer a bonus to the winners. People pray for a happy, healthy life for themselves and their loved ones and believe the winners have the best chance of seeing their wishes come true.
In Hong Kong, hundreds waited quietly into the night on Thursday for their chance to be the first to place incense sticks and offer prayers in front of the temple.
