China has gone through tremendous changes over the years, but Marxist theory has always been one of the pillars of Chinese politics. So how do different generations of Chinese people see Karl Marx and Marxism? We spoke to people in the streets of Beijing.
MS. SUN RETIREE "I think youngsters nowadays don't care about Marxism as much as people from my generation. Today people care more about their day to day concerns. Marxism had a profound influence on my generation, and we believe in its influence and contribution to China and us. The world has changed a lot, and China has changed a lot. China has found its own way of development in today's world, but I think we still hold on to Marxism."
XIE TIAN WHITE COLLAR EMPLOYEE "I took a course on Marxism when I was in university, like all university students in China. I think it built a foundation for my world view. It still serves as a guide in my work and everyday life."
LIU XING ACCOUNTANT "Marx taught me how to see things from the angle of development, not to focus on the short turn gain, but to plan for things in the long run. I think Marxism is a theory that keeps developing and perfecting itself through practice and time. So it will never be obsolete."
WANG ZENGSHUN BEIJING RESIDENT "Because China is on a socialist path, China should keep teaching Marxism to its youth. Today's youngsters have never been through hard times. Socialism is the only way for China. So China's youth should still study Marxism."
