China's trendiest and most defining auto show has opened. As domestic and international brands put big bets on the Chinese market, the trend for next year is clearly to go smart and clean. CGTN's Sun Ye has this report from southern China's Guangzhou.
More than 1,000 cars are on show this year, all vying to please the crowds, whether they're drivers or not.
SUN YE GUANGZHOU "I don't know how to drive, but a lot of future concept cars here say I don't need to. This one says they cruise on their own, park on their own and stay within the speed limit all by themselves."
And there is a technology that is happening and quite necessary now. A lot of cars here have air purifiers that keep PM2.5 particles out of the cabin.
The cars are considerate in different ways.
But the one trend car makers ALL agree on is the need to go electric.
From sedans and SUVs to sports cars, all are going green.
Polestar, a new-comer, says it's giving its electric vehicles "race-car features" out of demand.
ZHANG XIAONING HEAD OF PR & COMMUNICATIONS, POLESTAR CHINA "We anticipate explosive growth in EV cars in the coming three to five years, driven by consumer demand. Consumers are endorsing EVs in every level of the market. For our cars, this one is for those who look for high performance, we're using carbon fibre to reduce weight and give it some FI race-car features."
AUDI is bringing its first EV SUV model here. It will be ready to hit the Chinese market early next year.
FENG FUWEI PRODUCT MANAGER, AUDI "This EV car responds faster than most other mechanical types. China encourages the development of new energy vehicles and the market is more acceptive to EV now. Similar Audi models will be coming along."
Industry insiders say more than one million EVs will be sold in China this year.
So it makes sense that the country's top Auto Show is giving them their biggest showroom yet.
