Syria awoke on Saturday morning to the aftermath of joint military strikes by the US, Britain and France. In the Syrian capital of Damascus, the situation is now relatively calm. The hour-long attack started at 4 am local time, hitting three sites related to chemical weapons.
According to the Syrian government, the US and its allies fired more than 110 missiles.  Syrian officials confirm the country's air defenses shot down most of the missiles.
Meanwhile, Russia's defense ministry said none of the strikes hit areas covered by its air defenses around its Hmeimim air base and naval facility in Tartus. Witnesses saw blasts surrounding much of the Syrian capital and a huge fire could be seen from a distance to the east. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Security Council members to unite and exercise responsibility and show restraint.
