The US and Japan's foreign and defense chiefs met in Washington on Thursday for the first 2+2 security meeting since Donald Trump became US president, reaffirming their commitment to the bilateral alliance and said they would pursue more forms of cooperation. They also said they would continue to compel the DPRK to halt its nuclear and missile programs.
"At this first 2+2 conference since the start of the Trump administration, we were able to reaffirm the strong commitment of the United States and Japan... to the region," said Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono. "We agreed we would ramp up effective pressure [on the DPRK]."
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson also called on the DPRK to immediately halt its intercontinental ballistic missile and other missile launches. "We agreed to bolster our alliance capabilities to deter and respond to [the DPRK's] unacceptable behavior and other challenges to regional security," he said.
