British Prime Minister Theresa May has said the UK is committed to the Iran nuclear deal, though there are other issues that need to be addressed. Her statement follows a decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to pull out of the 2015 international agreement with Iran.
THERESA MAYUK PRIME MINISTER "I have been very clear in a number of conversations with the President of the United States about the belief of the United Kingdom that the JCPOA, the nuclear deal with Iran should stay. That is also the view shared by Chancellor Merkel of Germany and President Macron of France. That was made clear in the joint statement that I issued last night with Chancellor Merkel and with President Macron. We accept that there are other issues in relation to the behavior of Iran that need to be dealt with, ballistic missiles, the question of what would happen at the sunset clause at the end of the nuclear deal and the destabilizing activity of Iran in the region. Those are issues that need to be addressed and we are working with our European and other allies to do just that."
May issued a joint statement with French and German leaders on Tuesday, saying they will still uphold the deal despite Washington's retreat. The French foreign ministry said the foreign ministers of the three European countries are set to meet Iranian representatives next week. It added that President Emmanuel Macron will also speak with Iran's President Hassan Rouhani by phone on Wednesday to reaffirm France's wish to stay in the agreement.
