10 US citizens and two Costa Rican crew members were killed in a small plane crash in the northwestern Guanacaste region of Costa Rica on Sunday, AFP reported citing Luis Guillermo Solis, the president of the Central American country.

"The government of Costa Rica profoundly regrets the deaths of 10 US passengers and Costa Rican pilots in the air accident," Solis said in a statement.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
