President Xi Jinping paid a visit to Sanhe Village in Sichuan Province's Liangshan Prefecture on Sunday. The area has the country's largest population of the ethnic Yi people.
The village is located in a mountainous district, and has been identified by the central government, as an area of "concentrated poverty alleviation". The president paid visits to villagers' homes, and discussed poverty alleviation measures with local authorities. Combating poverty has long been a key part of President Xi's goals. China has made progress in eliminating poverty across the country, as areas of "extreme poverty" have been reduced significantly, for the first time in more than 30 years.
