China is considering whether a new overseas military base could better help the country in its peace efforts.
During a briefing at the State Council Information Office, a military expert said another support base would help fight terrorism and support the United Nations in humanitarian work.
The base could be similar to another Chinese station in the East African nation of Djibouti.
That opened in 2017 and has also helped the country's development.
No definitive plans have been announced, but the expert says it's a real possibility in the near future.
HE LEI FORMER VICE PRESIDENT, PLA ACADEMY OF MILITARY SCIENCE "We have to see which country might require a military support base according to the UN's missions assigned to China. And we also have to get that country's approval. But the main purpose of these bases is to provide logistics support instead of expanding military force. China is and always will be a major force in maintaining world peace and stability."
