It's a new cutting-edge recreational sport that's making its mark in the US. It's the sport of axe-throwing. Yes, it's throwing an axe onto a target. And in Washington DC, it's becoming a TRENDY activity to do with friends and family. CGTN's Connie Lee has the story.
Heads up! Or better yet, heads down--- for a high-flying axe. Welcome to this urban axe-throwing club where, just like throwing darts, these blades are hurled across the room, to hit a target. It's a new hang-out spot in Washington DC, where crowds of people-young and old, experienced or not- come and throw axes together, all for fun.
JEFF AXE-THROWING PARTICIPANT "It'll be a blast for a family to do this, especially if you're into outdoor, physical, throwing type of games."
JENIFER CUSHING AXE-THROWING PARTICIPANT "Tonight, we are having an adults-only night. Leaving the kids at home. Trying something different really."
This facility is run by Bad Axe Throwing-- a company that started in Canada, but is expanding across the U.S.
OMAR COOPER AXE COACH, BAD AXE THROWING "We've only been a company for four years. But we are one of the biggest axe clubs. This is the 16th location to open up for our company. We now have one in Florida and two more opening up."
Despite playing with a potential weapon, the experts here say it's a "safe sport", even allowing participants to drink while they play.
OMAR COOPER AXE COACH, BAD AXE THROWING "It's a very safe atmosphere. We've had no axe-related incident, where we had to write up axe incident reports. It is so fun and simple, everyone can get it."
Even reporters.
Reporter: "Show me how this done."
Coach: "You want to hold it like this, take it back, and follow through and swing."
Reporter: "Okay-- do you need a lot of muscles for this?"
Coach: "No, you don't."
BRAD PORRONE AXE COACH, BAD AXE THROWING "There's no secret technique, it's just practice. It's basically good form, keeping your body nice and straight, nice in a line."
JENIFER CUSHING AXE-THROWING PARTICIPANT "Throwing an axe and hitting the target right in the center feels pretty awesome."
"I think some people might feel like it's a good stress reliever, but, you know I think it's a good aggression reliever, as well."
And leaving the place injury-free, sounds like a good end to a night of throwing axes. Connie Lee, CGTN, Washington.
