China Weather: Cold front during Qingming holiday week
[]
Welcome back. A cold front is expected to continue to chill most parts of China during the Qingming holiday week. Roads, air, and the temperature have all been affected. Sun Tianyuan has more.
Winter has knocked Spring out of the capital with snow after more than a hundred dry days. It was greeted with excitement on the internet.
It could be Beijing's first and last day of snow this season. The last time the city saw April snow was 30 years ago. And elsewhere, it's taking hold. Many cities across North and Northwest China are feeling the chill. And during the Qingming holiday, it's disrupting a lot of travel plans.
STUDENT GANSU PROVINCE "I planned to go to Lanzhou during the holiday. But the weather is suddenly cold and starts to snow. I'd rather stay here and not go."
TRAVELLER SHANXI PROVINCE "The snow is quite heavy. I can only travel by train. I wanted to take a car, but the high-speed expressway is closed."
Traffic police have increased control and patrols, and clean up. Railway service has seen an increase in passengers. The cold front means some areas will see temperatures fall by as much as 20 degrees Celsius. Sandstorms are blasting parts of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Gansu Province where pollutants are reaching a severe level. Authorities have advised the public to take precautions regarding air quality, electricity, and telecommunications. The extreme weather is expected to last until Saturday.
