Twitter released its annual “Top 9 Most Retweeted Tweets of 2017” on Tuesday, and former US President Barack Obama dramatically beat his successor Donald Trump with three tweets topping the list, while the latter – named as the most tweeted elected US and world leader – couldn’t even make it on the top 9 list.
Obama’s most popular tweet is a photo of him greeting kids with different skin tones with the text quoting Nelson Mandela: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or his background or his religion...” This tweet was published on August 13 after anti-racism activist Heather Heyer was killed in Charlottesville and later acquired 1.7 million retweets and 4.6 million likes, becoming the second most retweeted tweet in 2017.

Besides this sentimental tweet, Obama also takes another two spots on the top 9 list. One is him showing his gratitude and the other is him sending a farewell to the public before his retirement. Each of them was liked over a million times.

Compared to his successful predecessor Obama, Donald meets his Waterloo on Twitter, as none of his tweets rank among the most popular ones. However, one of the 9 tweets does related to the famously heavy Twitter user, but in a negative way.

The seventh most popular tweet was from LeBron James calling Trump “u bum”, which achieved over 661,000 retweets and 1.5 million likes.
Besides for Trump’s negative association with the most popular 9, Trump’s bold and less thoughtful tweets also made his way to the top even more difficult.

According to media outlet indystar analyzing among Trump's last 600 tweets, the most popular Trump tweet has 363,385 retweets and is the one in which he called CNN “FraudNewsCNN” or FNN. In the video attached to this tweet, Trump tackled a guy labeled “CNN”, with commentators shouting “oh my god.”
To wrap things up, Trumps’ failure in winning Twitter users’ hearts proves that sometimes “less is better.”
