Syria Crisis: Hundreds killed by bombardment in the Eastern Ghouta
[]
Hundreds of people have been killed by the heavy bombardment in Eastern Ghouta. The UN Security Council has passed a resolution demanding a 30-day ceasefire. But the truce has been ignored by the Syrian government. Omar Khan has the details.
At least 24 people were killed overnight in Syria's Eastern Ghouta. This is according to war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Despite a UN Security Council ceasefire resolution, the Syrian government continues its bombardment of the last major rebel stronghold near Damascus. The UN Secretary-General has decried the scene as "hell on earth".
ANTONIO GUTERRES UN SECRETARY-GENERAL "Eastern Ghouta cannot wait, it is high time to stop this hell on earth. And I remind all parties of their absolute obligation under international humanitarian and human rights law to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure at all times."
The UN Security Council, including Russia, approved the resolution demanding a 30-day truce on Saturday. But the ceasefire quickly unraveled just like several previous agreements. And the bombardment and fighting has been one of the heaviest of Syria's seven-year war. Over 500 people have been killed in less than 10 days.
WOUNDED MAN "My brother-in-law came in to say hello, he walked in and then the missile from the plane hit. My son, nine years old, gone. We did not find his head. I am hit by shrapnel all over."
As the number of casualties continues to rise, hospitals are suffering from extreme shortages in medical supplies. And doctors say medical staff are exhausted.
DOCTOR MOHAMED "For nine days, the escalation has been night and day and the staff have been working non-stop. There has been no calm whatsoever, there hasn't been a time to catch one's breath, the blood is flowing and hospitals overflowing."
Health authorities said several people had shown symptoms consistent with chlorine gas exposure. But the Syrian government has consistently denied using chemical weapons. As the war in Syria enters its eighth year, the fighting has not abated and continues to rage across the country. Turkey presses on with its offensive against Kurds in Afrin, as rival rebel groups continue to fight each other in Idlib and a US-led coalition targets Islamic State militants in the east.
