In the UEFA Champions League tonight, Barcelona have the chance for a fourth straight win when they visit Inter Milan in group B with questions marks over the fitness of star-man Lionel Messi. The Argentine striker broke his arm last month, but is now back in training, and has made the trip to Italy. Damion Jones has the details.
Tuesday evening's UEFA Champions League clashes will be highlighted by Barcelona looking to repeat last month's 2-0 home win, versus Inter Milan. Lionel Messi is eager to get back on the pitch, as he took part in the Catalans final practice in Italy, less than three weeks after suffering a fracture in his right arm during a La Liga match against Sevilla, and an early return, would be a huge boost for the visitors.
SERGI ROBERTO BARCELONA DEFENDER "It is clear that the injury to Lionel Messi had us worried, because he is so important for us. He is one of the greatest players in the world, so the impact that his injury has had on the team is normal, but we have won several matches without him."
Inter Milan's loss in Spain two weeks ago left Barcelona at the summit of Group B, with the maximum nine points after three games in this season's European competition, and a repeat of that result would guarantee the top spot for the road club. But the Nerazzurri are determined to carry their recent Serie A momentum onto the continental stage, after scoring a combined eight goals while registering clean sheets against Lazio and Genoa. Mauro Icardi is expected to be the main offensive threat for the hosts, who believe they are heading into kickoff, as underdogs.
BORJA VALERO INTER MILAN MIDFIELDER "Barcelona are obviously the favorites. They are playing very well, and they have one of the best squads in the world. We have come back, and are now playing the Champions League after many years of not doing so. We need to be aware of where we are, and of our qualities, and we have to play a great match to get a good result, knowing that they are the favorites."
The action in Group C will feature English side Liverpool visiting Red Star Belgrade, but midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri is not making the trip. The 27-year-old, whose parents are of Kosovar-Albanian heritage, angered Serbian fans during Switzerland's 2-1 victory in the Group Stage of this summer's World Cup. In addition to netting the decider, his shoes featured Kosovo's flag, while his celebration incorporated a gesture reminiscent of Albania's eagle symbol -- meaning a hostile reception was guaranteed.
JUERGEN KLOPP LIVERPOOL MANAGER "We have to cool the situation down, because we cannot clarify that situation tonight, and it's not our job. We are in Serbia, and we respect that with 100 percent, and I know it's not sad, that's the world, that's how it is. Politics has always influence on life, on the planet I live at least, and that's how it is. But we are not here for that, we are here for playing football, and that's why we try to make sure we can be focused on football. I realize tonight, I expected it differently, but mostly the English-speaking journalists were asking about it to be honest. It could have been a story, but we didn't want to have a story besides a football story, and that's why we decided what we decided."
The night's other contests include Monaco entertaining Belgium's Brugge, while Spain's Atletico Madrid welcome Germany's Borussia Dortmund, in Group A. Tottenham Hotspur of England will take on PSV Eindhoven from the Netherlands in B, while French standouts PSG go up against Italian representatives Napoli in C. And Portuguese squad Porto are set to face Russian foes Lokomotiv Moscow, while Germany's Schalke battle Turkey's Galatasaray in Group D. DJ, CGTN.
