Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the vital role of science and technology in boosting China's development. Addressing a meeting of the Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering on Monday, he also called on the country to enhance innovation and take full charge of core technologies. Chinese President Xi Jinping said amid the new round of science revolution and reshaping of the global innovation landscape, the role of science has never been as profound as today in determining the destiny of a country and livelihood of its people.
President Xi hailed innovation as the primary driving force for scientific and economic development, calling for people to grasp the opportunities to enhance engagement between the Internet, big data and artificial intelligence with the real economy. He also urged China's industries to shift to the medium and high end of the global value chain. The Chinese president also emphasized the importance of innovation. He said scientists and those in the tech field must strive to take control of core technologies and take the initiative in innovation.

He said innovation should be realized in an open environment, and it's door to the outside world can not be closed. China will further enhance exchanges and cooperation with the international science community and take full advantage of global innovation resources. Only in this way, can China be able to contribute its wisdom to global science governance and tackle worldwide mutual challenges such as food security, energy security and climate change.
