China will support the country's car-sharing sector and standardize its development, according to an official guideline announced on Tuesday. The car-sharing sector is part of China's emerging sharing economy, which offers an alternative for urban commuting.
The official guideline credits car-sharing with easing demand for private cars and parking spaces. The guideline calls for car-sharing companies to conduct ID checks, protect user privacy and ensure the safe condition of cars.
Public and private parking lots are also encouraged to offer space for shared-cars. The government will encourage the car-sharing companies to use electric vehicles to reduce emissions. There are currently around 40 car-sharing companies in China, with 40,000 vehicles in service.
