Russian Diplomats Expelled: NATO expels 7 Russian diplomats, limits size of mission
[]
There is growing international solidarity with the UK against Russia. NATO is the latest, to expel diplomats from its Russian mission. It's a massive show of unity after the nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy and his daughter on British soil. More than two-dozen countries, including the U.S., European nations and members of the commonwealth, have expelled more than 140 Russian diplomats. CGTN's Mariam Zaidi reports from the NATO headquarters in Brussels.
MARIAM ZAIDI BRUSSELS International solidarity with the UK on the nerve agent attack in the city of Salisbury on a former Russian spy and his daughter continues today. Despite of course, continued Russian protestations against any involvement.
Earlier on Tuesday in Brussels, the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced his decision to withdraw the accreditation of seven staff at the Russian Mission to NATO. The pending accreditation request for three others has also been withdrawn. Stoltenberg added that the North Atlantic Council has reduced the Russian Mission to NATO by ten people, bringing the maximum size down to twenty.
JENS STOLTENBERG NATO SECRETARY GENERAL "This sends a clear message to Russia that there are costs and consequences for its unacceptable and dangerous pattern of behaviour. And it follows Russia's lack of constructive response to what happened in Salisbury."
And NATO's actions against Russia follows on the heels of the European Union's decision on Monday. Donald Tusk the EU Council President said that: 14 EU member states have expelled Russian diplomats. And that further measures beyond expulsion were expected in the coming days and weeks. So watch this space. MZA CGTN BRU.
