In an important move, ministers from the ASEAN nations have signed an agreement to facilitate cross-border e-commerce transactions. During his remarks at the signing ceremony, Singapore Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing said, that the agreement is a testament to ASEAN's commitment to the growth of e-commerce and that it will help create an environment of trust.
CHAN CHUN SING SINGAPORE TRADE AND INDUSTRY MINISTER "The Agreement, finalized after nine rounds of negotiations, has three aims. First, to facilitate cross-border e-commerce transactions. Second, to create an environment of trust and confidence in the use of e-Commerce. Third, to deepen cooperation among ASEAN Member States to further develop and intensify the use of e-commerce to drive regional economic growth."
Minister Chan used the opportunity to emphasize that ASEAN is the world's fastest growing internet market, with 330 million internet users. He added that ASEAN's internet economy is set to quadruple to 200 billion US dollars by 2025.
The e-commerce agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 17th ASEAN Economic Community Council Meeting, where Minister Chan spoke about ASEAN's need to stay open and connected, and anchor its relevance in global economy, especially against the backdrop of rising anti-globalization sentiment.
