December 10th marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. A symposium in China commemorates the occasion, as government leaders and scholars hailed the country's achievements in protecting human rights. As CGTN's Wu Guoxiu shows us, China hopes to share its experience with the world.
Reflecting on decades of human rights milestones in China, experts praise the accomplishments and say things can still get better.
President Xi Jinping, in a letter to ministers at a Beijing symposium, highlights what he feels is most important.
HUANG KUNMING, MINISTER PUBLICITY DEPART. OF CPC CENTRAL COMMITTEE "President Xi says the biggest human right is people's happiness. This reflects the purpose of all of our party's political solutions and practices. Chinese people in the new era, are enjoying human rights that are broader and more sufficient than anytime in the history."
Huang says over the last 70 years, China's average life expectancy has more than doubled, from 35 years old to 76.7.
Disposable income per capita has risen by nearly 23 times in the last four decades.
The nation also protects people's other rights, economic, political, environmental, and cultural rights under the rule of law.
He says China's experience should be better introduced to the world.
HUANG KUNMING, MINISTER PUBLICITY DEPT. OF CPC CENTRAL COMMITTEE "Different opinions of human rights are in fact about social system modes and value concepts. Communication is the effective way to reduce barriers and increase common sense. China remains open towards international human rights cooperation."
WU GUOXIU BEIJING "A message from this symposium is that China will stick to its own path of developing human rights. China. Wu Guoxiu, CGTN, Beijing."
