Now we move to the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod, where France are finalizing their preparations ahead of tonight's World Cup quarter-final with Uruguay. The French side's 4-3 win over Argentina saw Kylian Mbappe make his presence known on the global stage, as the 19-year-old bagged a brace, and now he along with the rest of Les Bleus, will have the tough task of overcoming a mean Uruguayan team which has only conceded one goal so far, but may be missing striker Edison Cavani due to a calf strain. Damion Jones has the details.
The French offense appears to be coming to life at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and Antoine Griezmann hopes to soon say the same thing on an individual level. The forward's only goal came from the penalty spot in the team's Group C opener against Australia, and now he will go up against Atletico Madrid club-mate Diego Godin, who has been rock solid on defense for Uruguay. Les Bleus are expected to move midfielder Corentin Tolisso into the starting line-up in place of Blaise Matuidi, who is suspended after getting a second yellow card, and coach Didier Deschamps is getting ready for multiple possibilities on the other side of the pitch.
DIDIER DESCHAMPS FRANCE COACH "I must prepare my team for whether Edinson Cavani plays or not. I will only know that on match day – an hour-and-a-half before the game, unless you tell me earlier – but if he is not playing, then there are other options. Oscar Tabarez has other options. Cristhian Stuani is an excellent player who has 21 goals for his club, Girona. He also has Cristian Rodriguez, who is a different type of player. I have prepared my team with these different options in mind, and more changes can be made during the course of the game."
So while Oscar Tabarez waits to see whether Edinson Cavani can suit up against France, most analysts expect the PSG forward to be replaced by Cristhian Stuani. Another option to partner with Luis Suarez in attack is 20-year-old Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez. There is no doubt that La Celeste's offense will have a different look one way or another, but the man who will make the final call in consultation with the Uruguayan medical staff, believes the most important thing is playing as a cohesive unit regardless of the personnel on the pitch, and making every effort to try to reach the semi-finals in Russia.
OSCAR TABAREZ URUGUAY COACH "I am not going to say anything else about Edinson Cavani because I have already given enough information, and I don't want to get into head games, you know. I don't want to go into mental games that are convenient for certain journalists, who have a concept of journalism that I don't approve of, and in a couple of hours, in 24 hours, you will know who will play, and who will be on the bench."
The odds are likely to be stacked high against Uruguay in Nizhny Novgorod, but the South Americans hope to add France to their list of defeated opponents, as they continue to chase their third World Cup title. Damion Jones, CGTN.
