More and more African youngsters are finding instant stardom - thanks to social media. How long does this fame last? Well, who can say? But for some, their sheer talent shines through. CGTN's Julie Scheier has the story of one little South African math genius who has left people in awe of his amazing skills.
10-year Sibahle Zwane will probably never need to use a calculator. He became an internet sensation, leaving social media users speechless, after a video of his exceptional math skills was shared. Sibahle lives on the outskirts of Johannesburg, in Lenasia. It's a poor area but it's rich in dreams.
MBALI ZWANE MOTHER OF SIBAHLE ZWANE "We are so proud we are even out of words, especially me I can't explain how I feel, sometimes I feel like crying or laughing, I don't know what to say. It came as a surprise at first, He was doing grade 2 at that time and his teacher phoned me and said you must come to school, when I went there she asked me if I was aware that Sibahle knows maths."
SIBAHLE ZWANE MATH GENIUS "I love maths because I like reading numbers, I going to go to better school so that I can continue with my Mathematics. When I grow up I want to be a pilot, I want to fly because I am good at maths I will be a good pilot."
Sibahle has the rare ability to calculate maths sums off the top of his head.
JULIE SCHEIER LENASIA, SOUTH AFRICA "Sibahle, are we going to play this game? Are you going to show me that you are a 10 year old human calculator? I am going to give you a number, 780 x 12, nine thousand three hundred and sixty, just like that, oh my word, 65,000 divided by 50. Sibahle is just as quick as my calculator. 757 x 30, Give me fiver better 10, well done little genius."
His mother is hoping, his online performance will open doors in the future.
MBALI ZWANE MOTHER OF SIBAHLE ZWANE "What I wish for my little boy, I wish he could find the best school pursue his dreams, because there is a lot of crime around here, the killing of children, kidnapping and everything, I would like him to move from the public school because there are so many in the classroom so each and every child needs attention, but especially Sibahle he needs more attention, so if we could get that attention I think he will be good because he is a fast learner in everything."
Most people by now are used to going online - to see precocious youngsters doing unlikely things. But, in a country where maths literacy is so low, Sibahle can be seen as a genius and inspiration to other children. JS, CGTN, LENASIA, SA.
