Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang welcomed Ivanka Trump’s attendance of a Spring Festival party this week at the Chinese embassy in Washington, DC, even as her father maintains an aggressive stance towards Beijing.

“We are very happy that Ivanka Trump and many other friends from the United States were in the Chinese embassy and joined the Chinese people… to celebrate the Chinese New Year of the Rooster,” Lu told CGTN in an interview at the end of the New Year holiday.
Ivanka Trump’s visit to the embassy on Wednesday night came in stark contrast to her father, US President Donald Trump, who departed this year from the recent White House practice of sending Lunar New Year wishes to Chinese people worldwide.
Trump has also repeatedly attacked China over trade and has appeared to question the one-China policy.

Commenting on Trump’s controversial travel ban denying nationals of seven Muslim-majority entry to the US, Lu stressed that “it is the sovereign right of each government to design or adjust its immigration policies.”
But he added “it’s also desirable to bear in mind legitimate concerns of all other relevant countries” when doing so.
