Over at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Doha, China's women continued their qualifying campaign with the last four events, the floor exercise, vault, uneven bars and balance beam. CGTN's Zhu Xuesong was in the Qatari capital to see how they fared as the competition enters crunch time with the finals starting tomorrow.
Although China began with their two weaker events, the floor exercise and vault, there were no big mistakes in their performance.
But mistakes emerged on the uneven bars. China's first competitor, Zhang Jin fell twice on the high bar where she planned to perform a Gienger and pike Jaeger. However, the other three Chinese athletes were not influenced by Zhang's errors and all of them contributed solid routines to the team score.
The last apparatus for China was the balance beam. One Chinese fell and two of them struggled, but Zhang was not among them as she finished with a fairly high score of 14.100 points.
The Chinese team's total score of 165.196 points ranked them third in qualifying, closely behind Russia, but far behind the USA.
ZHANG JIN CHINESE FEMALE GYMNAST "Before I stepped up for the beam, I told myself that I have to forget the mistakes I made on the bars and work solidly. I still felt nervous on the beam but I told myself that I have to look at the competition as an exercise."
LIANG CHOW CHINESE WOMEN'S HEAD COACH "I am satisfied with their performance. It is understandable that they made some mistakes because this is a new team. It is the first world Championship for most of the team members like Zhang Jin and Chen Yile, so it is understandable that they made some mistakes under the pressure. I think they can do better in the following days with some adjustments to their technical and physical training."
In individual qualifying, Luo Huan advanced to the uneven bars final and all-around final where Chen Yile will also compete. Zhang Jin and Liu Tingting's performance on the balance beam earned them a berth in the beam final. Liu Jinru qualified for the vault final.
ZHU XUESONG DOHA, QATAR "The big question now for Team China is whether they will be able to perform their best routines in their stronger events, the uneven bars and balance beam, while avoiding big mistakes in their weaker events, the vault and floor exercise, in the Women's Team Final on Tuesday.
