While US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called his meetings with DPRK officials "constructive", a statement released by the DPRK's foreign ministry suggests otherwise. Here are some of the comments made in the statement.
The DPRK foreign ministry statement said Pyongyang sought a balanced implementation of all the provisions reached in June at the DPRK-US summit in Singapore. But the US has only come up with a unilateral and "gangster-like" demand for denuclearization.
The DPRK, on the other hand, wants a step by step denuclearization. The statement said the US side never mentioned the issue of establishing a peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, which is essential for defusing tensions and preventing a war. They said, "The US side, during the talks, made a great deal about the suspension of one or two joint military exercises. But it is a highly reversible step which can be resumed anytime. This is incomparable with the irreversible step taken by the DPRK to explode and dismantle the nuclear test ground".
The DPRK foreign ministry statement added "We thought that the US side would come with a constructive proposal which would be in accord with the spirit of the DPRK-US summit meeting and talks. But our expectations and hope were so naive as to be foolish".
The statement also said, "In the last few months, we displayed maximum patience and watched the US while initiating as many good-will steps as we could. We still cherish our good faith in President Trump. The US should seriously consider whether it's in the interests of the country and the world, to go against the wills of the two top leaders".
