Teenagers in China continue to live digitally. The vast majority of their entertainment content comes from internet video platforms. That has created a big and burgeoning group of young internet entertainers. CGTN interviewed three Chinese content creators with massive social media followings and asked them what they make, how they became successful and what they think about the future of this industry.
LI WEI DANCER "I have always loved to dance. I record my dance routines and post them online. A lot of my fans like me because I am not afraid to dance in public spaces. Whether it is in the park or on the street. I hit record on my camera, put on a big smile, and just dance. How much you can relate to the minds of youngsters is the key. I am not a professional dancer. I am not a star celebrity. I'm just a normal person like everyone else. I think that's part of the reason why people like my content."
ZHANG QIUSHI GAMER "Mostly I create game-related videos. In my college, in my class, I can't come up with a name that doesn't play games. I think now game is no longer a criterion to tell bad kids from good kids. It's simply for my generation a very important way of relaxation. I make money mainly through making commercial videos for businesses. Mainly game businesses like Tencent, Netease. I have seen many of my friends doing this to make a living. You know I'm pursuing my college study. I don't need that much money to sustain my everyday life. So now it can support me pretty well. Our parents, they think this is not a career. I think it is a career that many people can pursue. But I haven't decided yet. I'm still trying to study very hard. For creators like me, they have to go professional. That have to treat this as a job, so the industry can evolve. Also for the industry itself, it needs to have standardized industry practice such as contracts."
LI YIKE MUSICIAN "My personal belief is that people are created to create. All you need to succeed on the internet is to be creative. You can use anything to make music. I love music. I love video. It's more like a lifestyle or life attitude. Chinese people's life quality is getting better and better, and our demand for entertainment content is increasing. As a result, more and more creators will be happy to join the industry and the content themselves will be valued a lot more."
