Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson discussed the Syrian conflict during Saturday's telephone call, in particular ways to bring stability to the country's north, the Russian foreign ministry said on Sunday.
They discussed tackling the Syrian crisis under the aegis of the UN, as well as a possible agenda for Syrian talks due in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi in late January, it said in a statement.
The two top diplomats "focused on the situation in Syria, including issues of stability in the country’s north and promotion of the UN-brokered peace settlement which the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, which is due to be convened in Sochi bringing together a wide range of participants, should facilitate," the ministry said in a statement.
"Some other topical global and bilateral issues have been touched upon," it said, noting Tillerson and Lavrov "agreed to stay in close contact."
