Syria Crisis: EU calls on countries to use influence to prevent use chemical weapons

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg and calling on all countries to make sure chemical weapons are never again used in Syria. A statement did not mention airstrikes launched this weekend by the US, the UK, and France. The EU foreign policy chief is now calling for a political solution to the seven-year-war in Syria.
FEDERICA MOGHERINI EU FOREIGN POLICY CHIEF "We will adopt (Security) Council conclusions. We will reiterate our common position that I stated on behalf of the 28 member states in the last couple of days, and especially on the use of chemical weapons and our reaction to that. But most of all we will work to prepare the Brussels conference next week so that it can be the opportunity to relaunch the UN-led process, political process."
Federica Mogherini urged Russia and Iran to use their influence to convince Syrian President Bashar Assad to enter negotiations to end the war.  Also on Monday, the OPCW held an emergency meeting in the Hague to discuss the alleged chemical attack near Damascus. Its inspectors have not yet visited the area, which is now under government control. Critics of the Syrian government say evidence of the gas attack might be removed.
