Still in the trial phase, the system was launched in January said the Chongqing Marriage and Adoption Registration Management Center (CMARMC). It’s tasked with making the registration process easier and faster.
According to Chinese law, registrars must check a person's ID and household registration before awarding a couple a marriage certificate. By using facial recognition, it can not only shorten the time needed to check all the documents, but also improve the accuracy. The new system allows the registrar to take a photo quickly and check it with information from the public security bureau’s database.

Facial recognition can complete the process in as little as 0.3 seconds said the CMARC. When done manually, checking all the documents can take around 10 minutes. The new system can also deal with “special” cases more easily, where the applicants are twins or have had plastic surgery.
