Nigeria fans will be leaving Russia after their team lost 2-1 in the last minute to Argentina on Tuesday in their final group C encounter. It had looked good for the Super Eagles following victory over Iceland and while their supporters can take heart of the team's performance, it's not their official stance on how things went in Russia. CGTN's Mahia Mutua has more.
In a city like Moscow, opportunities for Africans to meet up and watch football are few and far between. At this venue, those living away from home can sample dishes from home - like jollof rice, plantains and fufu, miles away from home.
MAHIA MUTUA MOSCOW "Food, football and familiar tunes. All comforts for those living away from home - especially during this World Cup season."
Eventually, attention shifts to the reason the majority Nigerian patronage is gathered here. The tense encounter with perennial rivals Argentina. Lionel Messi's early goal is cancelled out in the second half by a Victor Moses penalty. But in the end, it isn't meant to be for Gernot Rohr's men as Marcos Rojo's late goal ends the dream for these fans. A disallowed penalty for handball sticks out for most of these fans as a contention point.
"Quite unfortunately that we lost the game and we're not happy over it. We played quite well, the boys played quite well, but referees are like that. We deserved to win or draw this game, but the referee disallowed a clear penalty."
"Nigeria did very well, but I don't see why the referee cannot blow that penalty because it's a real penalty. Handball. I think the referee is somehow don't let me use the word biased. I give kudos to Nigeria, they really did well."
"We're out; there's nothing we can do about it. I give credit to my country - I'm very proud of them. Especially the likes of Mikel Obi, Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Ahmed Musa and Troost-Ekong. They played fantastic football."
Heartbreak for the fans as the Super Eagles fail to reach the knockout round in their sixth World Cup appearance as the sun sets on the hopes of yet another African team in Russia. Mahia Mutua, CGTN.
