Oktoberfest has come to the Ugandan capital, Kampala, with food, music, dancing and of course, beer. Around five thousands people turned up to the event. CGTN's LEON SSENYANGE has the story.
A taste of Germany in a local setting. The tapping of the first keg set off an exciting day. It was time for the Oktoberfest in the heart of Uganda's capital Kampala.
DR. ALBRECHT CONZE GERMAN AMBASSADOR TO UGANDA "All over Africa Oktober fests are becoming popular now and I am very happy. I don't need to explain why, you can see it all."
There was plenty to eat. Loud music to dance to and lots to drink. All meant to mimic the Bavarian tradition that dates back to the 19th century.
LEON SSENYANGE KAMPALA, UGANDA "Beer is undoubtedly the day's biggest attraction, but it's the friendly competitions that serve up a day of fun."
First time goers Fitz Glay battled four others for who could lift a beer-filled stein the longest. A thrilling experience indeed it was for the Jamaican.
FITZ GLAY REVELER "Very exciting, especially at the last part when everybody's hand was shaking. I said hold firm."
It was also a day to show off traditional German clothing. Some revellers gracefully tacked away in the dirndl dresses and lederhosens.
NASSER MUKALAZI REVELER "The costume was designed in Munich and it's quite a lovely costume, very friendly."
Around five thousands people turned up. The indulging could only continue until the wee hours of the night. Organizers say the numbers are expected to grow with every celebration. LS CGTN Kampala Uganda.
