With just under two years to go before Senegal hosts the 2022 Youth Olympic Games, teams from the West African nation are preparing to hunt for glory in different sports. CGTN's Bryan Tous-saint reports on the progress the country is making.
Several venues are being worked on for the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics. Some of the existing facilities include the National Wrestling Arena which is a donation from China and the Dakar Arena. The two facilities are set to be the main venues for event.
MBAYE JACQUES DIOP SENEGAL SPORTS MINISTRY TECHNICAL ADVISER "Dakar Arena is a multidisciplinary and multifunctional sports centre. At the inauguration, President Macky Sall also announced the construction of an Olympic Stadium. This stadium will be near Dakar Arena and will be part of the infrastructure that will host the 2022 Youth Olympic Games. Then there also is the National Wrestling Arena, which is a donation from the People's Republic of China. These are two quality facilities that are now the pride of Dakar. Other stadiums in other cities have also been selected and will be upgraded."
Built on three hectares, the Dakar Arena holds a capacity of fifteen thousand. The facility can accommodate up to fifteen different disciplines including basketball, handball, tennis, boxing and martial arts. Recently, NBA Africa dispatched a team to Dakar to investigate the quality of the available infrastructure in preparation for the games.
FRANCK TRAORE NBA AFRICA DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS "We are very proud that the Senegalese government has invested the necessary resources to set up this arena. This is something beautiful, something the African continent can be proud of and all the other governments on the continent can be inspired by the Senegalese government. We need more world-class facilities to allow the sport to develop."
According to the International Olympic Committee, the estimated cost of organizing the 4th edition of the Summer Youth Olympics is placed at 150 million dollars where 2000 boys and girls are expected to compete in more than twenty. Bryan Toussaint, GGTN.
