As for the field events on tap in Shanghai, Chinese shot putter Gong Lijiao won the title at last year's Diamond League meet with a throw of 19.46 meters. But she will face a stiff challenge from two-time Olympic gold medalist Valerie Adams, who did not make the trip to the PRC last season.

Gong claimed the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, before winning the world championship in London last summer. The 29-year-old then topped the podium at the IAAF Diamond League Finals in August, but neither Adams nor former champion Christina Swanitz competed at that event in Zurich, so the Chinese shot putter is looking forward to going up against a couple of her top rivals in Shanghai.
