With today's improved living standards and lifestyles in China, young parents want to provide the best they can for their babies. The trend is leading many parents to buy foreign-made baby products. Despite the higher costs, parents today swear by the quality and safety of the foreign brands. CGTN's Xia Ruixue reports.
Qiao Xiaogang is a new mom in central China.
Raising her first child, Qiao wants her daughter to have the best of everything, without breaking the bank.
And most of the baby products she's buying are foreign-made.
QIAO XIAOGANG NEW MOM FROM ZHENGZHOU "Baby cream, diapers, infant formula, bowls and spoons, her cooking set, etc. Everything I bought for her is imported."
Despite the higher costs of imported baby products, Qiao spends close to 40% of her monthly salary on her little one. She says it's all about quality and safety.
QIAO XIAOGANG NEW MOM FROM ZHENGZHOU "If you walk into any supermarket or specialty store, you'll find that most of the baby products are foreign brands. And you can also buy them online, very easily."
Across China, demand for imported baby products continues to rise.
Experts say it's due in large part to social media.
From parenting advice to product reviews, Chinese moms love to share anything baby-related online.
And the good word about foreign brands has spread quickly.
XU QIAN ZHENGZHOU "Some overseas brands have over 100 years history. So we trust them. We believe they are made with more advanced technology and better raw materials. And in some of my WeChat groups, the moms nearly all bought the same brand of baby stuff."
FENG LIXUAN, PURCHASING MANAGER ZHONGDAMEN BONDED COMMODITY O2O SHOPPING CENTER "We sell imported goods from 70 different countries. Last year, we saw one billion yuan of sales volume. Maternity and baby products accounted for 40%. That's huge."
Experts say China's second-child policy and the e-commerce boom are revitalizing the maternity and baby product industry. A report by Babytree, a Chinese parenting website, says that in 2017, the market for maternity and baby products was 2.6 trillion yuan. It's estimated that the number will exceed 4 trillion yuan by 2020. The report also shows that with quality and safety the most important factors, foreign brands should remain the top sellers.
XIA RUIXUE ZHENGZHOU "Today, young Chinese parents want better, safer and more functional maternity and baby products. With the entry of more international brands into China, it's crucial for domestic producers to improve their core technologies and materials to win over the trust of their customers.
