Visions for the Future: China champions further reform and opening-up at Boao Forum
[]
Today marks the final day of the Boao Forum for Asia. Out reporter Yang Chengxi takes you through the highlights.
YANG CHENGXI BOAO, HAINAN "An open and innovative Asia for a world of greater prosperity. The theme of this year's Boao Forum is reflected strongly in Chinese President Xi Jinping's keynote speech. He said the country is now the second biggest economy in the world, and it wouldn't have come this far if it wasn't for its commitment to reform and opening up."
XI JINPING CHINESE PRESIDENT "China's open door will never be closed but instead will be opened wider."
To back up the claim, he announced four major policy measures this year that will widen market access, facilitate more trade and improve the business environment in China.
This is a forum of new faces. Participants listened to China's new finance minister and central bank governor. The forum itself has also welcomed new board of directors.
WANG YI FOREIGN MINISTER OF CHINA "I extend my congratulations to the new board chairman General Ban Ki-Moon, and the new vice chairman Zhou Xiaochuan."
The forum's sessions included topics from new technologies like blockchain and AI to China's regional strategies like the Greater Bay Area. However, the most popular topic of discussion has been the recent China-US trade tension. While the three major reports from the forum showed positive momentum in Asia, protectionist sentiment from the USA has caused concerns.
In the forum's closing press conference. Boao's secretary general Zhou Wenzhong announced the participants' consensus on this year's forum: China will continue to reform and open up, and that technological and policy innovation is the way to achieve high-level economic growth and world peace.
