Peking opera, as a form of stage performance, has gained a significant presence in movies. This year's Shanghai Film Festival has showcased a batch of classic Peking Opera movies, including "Farewell My Concubine" and "Lady General Mu Takes Command." YANG YAN has the story.
The Peking opera movie "Farewell My Concubine" was inspired by the play of the same name. Famous Peking opera artists Shang Changrong and Shi Yihong act in the leading roles. Supported by modern technology, the brilliant scenes and deeply touching moments are vividly revealed.
TENG JUNJIE DIRECTOR "My adaptation is based on the performance routine and the style of Peking opera. The main work I did was to delete unnecessary details while focusing on the part describing the fate of the key figure, and highlighting conflict."
The Peking Opera Film Project has been ongoing for eight years. Opera artists and other professionals in the film industries from Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin have produced the first batch of Peking opera movies. Ten films have been released in public cinemas.
LIU CHANGYU PEKING OPERA ARTIST "A theater with 2,000 seats is limited. Movies can reach a wider audience. After decades of development, and exploring different generations, the work will be contagious. The classics will boost our confidence and carry forward China's traditional art."
LI WEIKANG PEKING OPERA ARTIST "Peking opera is a classic form of Chinese traditional culture. It represents the nation's manner and the flavor of China. We should present the most splendid parts, the beautiful scenery and the singing, to other countries."
From preparation to production and promotion, the Peking Opera Film Project has been devoted to the entire effort. Ten movies from the first batch participated in several international film festivals, and received a warm welcome.
SHI YIHONG PEKING OPERA ARTIST "We brought movies to several countries. There are a lot of people over there who want to know more about Asia, the stories, the genuine culture. They want to know this generation, the drama of this age. We are the promoters and players in the Peking Opera Film Project. Our predecessors left these classic works, and we are obliged to pass down these treasures, to record them and let the whole world see."
Filming for the second batch of Peking opera movies has begun. The aim is to showcase quality work and invite more talented young people to join the crew. YANG YAN, CGTN.
