At least five people were killed and another 12 injured in the explosion, said Governor of Homs Talal al-Barazi on Tuesday.
The death toll is expected to rise as two of the wounded are in critical condition, the governor said.
Most of the passengers are believed to be university students.
"Terrorists" planted the device inside a passenger bus in the Ekrima neighborhood, according to SANA.
The blast turned the bus to a pile of charred metal and damaged other cars, as well as nearby shops.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
