Hello and Welocme to Sports Scene, I'm Jenifer Hsiung in Beijing. After 17 days of intense competition, the 23rd Winter Olympic Games have come to an end in PyeongChang, South Korea. Under the theme "The Next Wave", the closing ceremony emphasized the "Human Spirit of Perseverance". Representatives from 93 countries and regions took part in the gala, where perhaps one of the most highly anticipated segments was the eight-minute performance highlighting the next Winter Games in Beijing, 2022. Our correspondent Tracey Holmes has the details.
Olympic Ceremonies traditionally deliver some of the highest global television ratings on record. With spectacles like this, it's easy to see why. For the athletes -- including China's short track gold medalist Wu Dajing -- it signals a time when they can truly celebrate being Olympians, now that the Games themselves are over, and the pressure is off. Then the all-important handover ceremony to the next Winter Olympic organizers -- Beijing 2022. The Zhang Yimou directed component highlighting Artificial Intelligence and Human Interaction, as well as using distinct Chinese characteristics in a way the entire world could understand.
TRACEY HOLMES PYEONGCHANG "The fireworks are finished, the medals have been awarded, and the show now moves on. This PyeongChang Winter Olympics is the first of three Olympics for the region -- next Tokyo will host the 2020 Summer Games -- then it's off to Beijing in 2022 for the next Winter Games signalling a golden period for the Asian Region."
These games will be remembered mostly for the participation of the DPRK -- with a high level delegation including the leader's sister, Kim Yo Jong, a 200-plus cheer squad that mesmerised crowds wherever they went, and the joint women's hockey team with players from the DPRK and South Korea -- playing into the hands of the slogan "The Peace Olympics." Coach Sarah Murray, an American-Canadian, said it took her some time to be convinced, but by the end of the Games, she described the experience as life changing for all.
There were also dramas from the neutral team dubbed "Olympic Athletes from Russia" competing under the Olympic Flag. They had a team of more than 160 athletes here winning medals in six sports, although it was the bronze medal in curling that got the most attention. It had to be handed back after a positive drug test for Alexander Krushelnitskiy, and another from bobsledder Nadezhda Sergeeva, eliminating any chance they had of having the Russian flag fly at the Closing Ceremony. The IOC says it recognizes the work that's being done inside Russia to rectify its widespread doping issue, and the Russian Olympic Committee will be reinstated after these Games. But now the attention switches to China for Beijing 2022. With a talented team spearheaded by medalists such as short track skater Wu Dajing, speed skater Gao Tianyu, and figure skaters Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, there is plenty to build on.
